studio is celebrating its 20th anniversary. I am incredibly proud of
all the work we have done together. Read on for more about the
studio's history and an interview I did to share my experience over
the past twenty years (and more!). And stay tuned for more ways we'll
be celebrating this momentous occasion.
INTERVIEW WITH ANGELA
Founded by Angela Dorantes and Avilee Goodwin, Steppin' Out Dance
Studio began in 1995, evolving out of the historic Betty May Dance
Studios. Iconic dance teacher Betty May served the children of the
Mission District from the 1930s until her death in 1994. Angela Rose
Dorantes is the current owner of Steppin' Out Dance Studio and
continues to expand the vision of her mentor. New dance styles such as
creative movement and contemporary have been added to the repertoire
as the studio continues to grow, develop, and thrive. To celebrate
Steppin' Out's 20th anniversary, Angela offers some insights into the
history of the studio and her own personal journey into dance.

MOVEMENT OF THE MONTH: STRETCHING:
In the cold winter months, it's even more important to keep your
dancer stretching: before class to prepare the body to dance, after
class to cool the body down, and any old time to release stress and
tension. There are many ways to stretch, but here are two good ones:
*Butterfly*: While sitting on the floor, bring the bottom of the feet
together and bend forward reaching nose to toes. Release the back and
especially the neck and breathe deeply. *Forward Fold*: In a standing
position, reach the hands to the floor and allow gravity to pull the
top of the head toward the ground. Bend the knees slightly to release
the lower back, then roll up one vertebrae at a time to stand tall.
PARTICIPATION FEE/NO MORE TICKETS!
If you've ever been stuck in the long, long line waiting to be
admitted into the auditorium for the performance, you'll be excited to
hear that this year Steppin' Out will be introducing a new model of
funding to cover the cost of the theater rental. Instead of asking
each audience member to buy a ticket, we'll have a simple, modest
performance "fee" per dancer that will allow you to bring as many
audience members as you'd like without any tickets at all. The
participation fee will be $25 fee per student ($10 second performing
sibling, $5 third [or beyond] performing sibling). That means all
guests, family and friends get in FREE to the performances! The
performance fee is per-student, so if you are performing in more than
one show you only pay one participation fee. Participation fees are
due no later than March 31st. As always, if any charges present a
financial hardship, please see Angela.
STUDIO SPOTLIGHT: STEPPIN' OUT ANNUAL MEETING
Last month the entire Steppin' Out staff came together to brainstorm
about this year's performance as well as other studio developments. If
you haven't met us all, you can see a photo of the entire staff during
the meeting here:
